Cayman Islands in the Caribbean
The Grand and smaller Cayman Brac besides Little Cayman together make up this quaint British Overseas Territory
that is one of the hottest Caribbean island holiday spots of recent times since the Cayman islands were discovered
by Columbus in the 16th century and tagged as Las Tortugas – after the hundreds of sea turtles sighted here at the
time.
However, some time down the line, there were many native caiman crocodiles noticed here, which led to these
islands being re-christened as the Cayman group, though they still remained for the most part, uninhabited by
humans till the latter part of the 1600s when British troops took over Jamaica from Spain and in the process of
this takeover, also gained access to the Cayman Islands. Over the next hundred years that followed the English
settlements on the islands were joined by emigrants from Spain, Holland and France adding to the local population
here in addition to Oliver Cromwell’s army’s deserters too settling down, some with their slaves, some with
families, others without.
Thus, Jamaican history and culture is as varied as its landscape; its nightlife, cuisine, crafts, art and
architecture too are vital aspects of a mixed group of world cultures that make it the perfect holiday locale for
those that love a dash of adventure, romance, intrepid fun and loads of secret, hide-out scope in caves, coves, sea
watches and eco tourism facilities on offer – only at the Cayman Islands!
Diving at Littel Cayman
Moving on to the other Caribbean style vacation ideas one can experience at the Cayman Islands, the best dive
destinations of all three islands is Bloody Bay Wall, off shore from Little Cayman, though shore diving
opportunities galore are available at other locations. Snorkeling trips are just as popular for many tourists and
Stingray City or Sandbar provide the top choice for feeding, petting and checking out these stunning sea creatures
native to the Caribbean islands.
Those that are not completely water-babies can try out the semi-submersible tours available from local tour
companies who conduct these on a regular basis for above the wave adventurers – so no fear of getting those neat
coiffeurs or designer swimwear wet!
For endurance athletes and those with a penchant for rock-climbing, the Brac's limestone bluff is a great place
to head with a sturdy pair of hiking boots and a head for heights.
